The Genesis Process & Authenticity

Are laboratory-created memorial diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. Scientifically and visually, they are absolutely identical to natural earth-mined diamonds. They share the same crystal lattice, timeless brilliance, and flawless hardness. The only true difference is their profound origin—purposefully grown in our laboratory, making your bespoke diamond infinitely more meaningful than any stone pulled from the ground.

How does the memorial diamond creation process work?

We begin by extracting and purifying the carbon from your provided ashes or hair. This refined carbon is then placed into a High-Pressure High-Temperature (HPHT) environment that flawlessly mimics the natural conditions deep within the earth's mantle. Over time, the carbon crystallizes, growing into a stunning, genuine diamond.

How can I be certain the diamond is made exclusively from my loved one's carbon?

Trust is the foundation of Carbon and Kin. Upon placing your commission, you are assigned a unique identification number that tracks your carbon through every single stage of transformation. Your loved one's carbon is processed in a dedicated, completely unshared furnace cycle, and all equipment is rigorously sterilized between commissions.

Why does it take several months to grow a bespoke diamond?

True alchemy requires time. The majority of this period is devoted to the actual growth of the diamond, allowing the crystal lattice to form perfectly within the HPHT environment. Additionally, meticulous carbon purification, precision cutting, hand-polishing, and independent certification all require unhurried dedication to ensure your legacy is flawless.

Will I receive updates during the diamond genesis journey?

Absolutely. We understand the emotional significance of this journey. Our dedicated team will personally keep you informed with status updates during all major milestones of the creation process, from the secure arrival of your carbon to the final polishing of your diamond.

Can my diamond be officially certified by an institute like IGI?

Yes. To guarantee absolute quality and authenticity, your memorial diamond can be independently evaluated and certified by accredited third-party gemological institutes, such as the International Gemological Institute (IGI), just like any high-end fine jewelry.

Do you offer laser inscription for personal messages?

Yes, we offer microscopic laser inscription on the girdle of the diamond. This allows you to immortalize a name, date, or short personal message of up to 20 characters. This delicate inscription remains invisible to the naked eye and can only be viewed under a jeweler's microscope.

Carbon Sourcing & Submission

How much ashes or hair is required to create a memorial diamond?

To meticulously extract sufficient carbon for the genesis process, we require approximately 50 grams of cremated ashes or 2 grams of hair.

Why is less hair required compared to cremated ashes?

Hair is highly carbon-rich, comprised of about 50% carbon. In contrast, the intense heat of cremation leaves ashes with approximately 1% to 4% carbon. Therefore, a much smaller physical volume of hair is needed to extract the same amount of pure carbon required for the genesis process.

Can I combine different carbon sources, such as ashes and hair?

Yes. If you do not have enough of a single material, or if you simply wish to combine them for sentimental reasons, ashes and hair can be seamlessly integrated during our purification process to create your bespoke diamond.

Can I combine carbon sources from multiple family members or pets?

Yes. We frequently create "family diamonds" or "bond diamonds" by combining the carbon sources (hair or ashes) of multiple individuals, partners, or beloved animal companions into a single, unified gemstone.

What if I do not have the fully requested amount of ashes or hair?

If you possess less than the standard required amount, please contact our concierge team. Our advanced laboratory extraction processes are highly efficient and can often successfully cultivate a diamond from smaller amounts, or we can discuss supplementary carbon options.

Is there a time limit? Can you use remains from someone who passed away years ago?

There is no expiration date on carbon. We can successfully extract viable carbon from ashes regardless of how many years or decades have passed since the cremation, and we can utilize hair saved from any period in time.

Do I need to wash or prepare the hair before sending it?

There is no need to wash, clean, or prepare the hair before shipping. It will be thoroughly and respectfully cleaned and sterilized upon arrival at our laboratory as the first step of the purification process.

What happens to any unused ashes or hair after the diamond is completed?

We treat your provided materials with the utmost reverence. Any carbon source—whether ashes or hair—that is not completely utilized during the diamond genesis process will be securely and respectfully returned to you alongside your finished diamond.

Bespoke Design, Cuts & Colors

What diamond sizes (carats) and cuts are available?

We offer bespoke diamonds ranging from 0.20 to 5.00 carats. While the classic Round Brilliant cut is our most requested shape for maximizing light reflection, our master cutters also expertly craft Radiant, Princess, Emerald, Asscher, Heart, Pear, Marquise, Cushion, and Oval cuts to match your aesthetic vision.

What happens if the final diamond weighs less than the carat size I ordered?

Every genesis cycle is a unique organic process dictated by the individual characteristics of the carbon provided. While our experts strictly aim for your specified size, if the final polished diamond falls slightly below your ordered carat tier, we will automatically and proportionately refund you the difference in carat value.

How do the different diamond colors form?

The natural trace elements present in ashes and hair influence the gemstone's color. By standard procedure, the presence of nitrogen creates a warm yellow hue, while retaining boron yields a stunning blue. To achieve our highly sought-after pure colorless diamonds, we must meticulously extract all trace minerals to reach the highest level of carbon purity.

Will the natural color of my loved one’s hair affect the color of the diamond?

No. A person's natural hair color is determined by a pigment called melanin, not by carbon. Since we extract only the pure carbon structure from the hair sample and eliminate all other organic compounds, the original hair color has no impact on the final color of the diamond.

Can I order the loose diamond on its own without a jewelry setting?

Yes. The memorial diamond itself is the profound core of this journey. You are absolutely welcome to commission only the loose diamond, arriving beautifully secured in our custom presentation box, and choose to have it set into jewelry at a later date.

Fine Jewelry Settings

What precious metals do you offer for your jewelry settings?

To complement your bespoke diamond, we offer a curated selection of premium fine jewelry settings crafted in solid 14K and 18K White Gold, Yellow Gold, and Rose Gold, as well as exceptionally durable Platinum.

Are the ashes or hair also used in the metal of the jewelry?

No. We treat your loved one's carbon with singular focus. The extracted carbon is utilized exclusively to grow the diamond itself. Our jewelry settings are cast from pure, ethically sourced precious metals.

Can you mount the memorial diamond into my own existing personal jewelry?

To guarantee the highest standard of structural integrity and aesthetic perfection, we only mount our diamonds into the bespoke settings available in The Heritage Collection, The Royal Collection, or The Flora Collection, or custom designs we collaborate on together. However, you may commission the loose diamond from us and have a trusted local jeweler mount it into your personal piece.

Can I purchase a single diamond earring instead of a pair?

Yes. We understand that honoring your loved one is a deeply personal choice. You are welcome to commission a single diamond to be mounted into a single stud or drop earring, which is priced accordingly at 70% of a complete pair.

Pricing, Payments & Secure Logistics

How does the cost of a memorial diamond compare to a natural earth-mined diamond?

While our memorial diamonds and earth-mined diamonds share the exact same chemical and physical properties, they represent vastly different values. Earth-mined stones are priced based on market scarcity, whereas a memorial diamond's cost reflects the intricate, months-long scientific artistry required to transform your beloved's essence into a bespoke, everlasting gem.

What is the payment structure for a bespoke commission?

We operate on a structured, transparent payment schedule. A 50% initial deposit is required upon receiving your carbon materials to commence the purification and genesis process. The remaining 50% balance is only due when your diamond is fully completed, certified, and ready for secure final shipping.

Are financing or monthly installment plans available?

Yes. We believe that honoring a loved one should be accessible without immediate financial strain. We partner with Affirm to offer flexible, financed monthly payment plans, allowing you to settle the balance comfortably over time.

Are there any discounts available for ordering multiple diamonds?

Yes. We offer thoughtful tier-based pricing for families wishing to commission multiple bespoke diamonds from the same carbon source. When your commission includes multiple diamonds, they are arranged in descending order by carat weight. You will receive 5% off the second diamond, 8% off the third, and 10% off the fourth and any subsequent diamonds within the same order.

How is my finished diamond shipped securely to me?

Security and peace of mind are paramount. Your finished diamond is shipped via premium registered courier services (such as FedEx or USPS Registered Mail) requiring a direct signature upon delivery. We provide detailed tracking information so you can monitor your diamond's journey home.

What happens in the unlikely event the diamond gets lost during shipping?

While instances of loss are exceptionally rare with our specialized couriers, your entire commission is fully insured during transit. In the highly unlikely event of a logistics failure, we offer a full refund, or we can create a replacement diamond at no additional cost using your securely archived remaining carbon.

Do you ship internationally, and will there be import fees?

Yes, we regularly and securely ship our bespoke diamonds internationally to clients in the UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, Singapore, and beyond. Please note that international shipments may be subject to local customs duties or import taxes, which are determined by your country's regulations and are the responsibility of the receiver.
